Experts have admitted that the actual number of new coronavirus infections in the United States is greater than what has been officially recorded.
Many people and families use home COVID-19 testing.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the number of true infections is much higher among children, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Evidence comes from blood samples from children drawn in commercial laboratories for reasons unrelated to COVID-19, such as cholesterol and lead levels.
About 80% of those blood samples drawn in May and June contained a type of antibody that the immune system does not produce unless it encounters an infection, rather than in response to vaccines.
Assuming that percentage is correct for all US children, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that at least 57 million children and teens had contracted the coronavirus as of the end of June, four times the cumulative total of cases recorded so far.
