All that LED magic in the headlights has a downside.
First it was halogen, then xenon and now all modern cars are equipped with LED. It's a joy to drive. Crystal clear light and in the more luxurious cars it is sometimes surprising to see how far they can shine. It's almost magical.
Headlights have undergone enormous developments. Sometimes you don't think about it. Lamps that are able to shine half bright light, so that the oncoming motorist does not have to deal with a bright light in his or her face. But is that really the case in practice?
Headlight glare
According to the ANWB, they are receiving more and more complaints from motorists who have to deal with glare on the road. The organization told Nu.nl this. To avoid glare, people look away or close their eyes for a moment. This in turn can cause dangerous situations in traffic.
Glare can have many reasons. For example, because the lighting has been incorrectly adjusted by a car. Or because you are in a low sports car, with a crossover behind you. The headlight can then shine directly into your interior mirror. LED lighting is brighter than halogen, for example, which increases the feeling of glare.
The ANWB says that eight in ten people experience problems with dazzling headlights on the road. The organization cannot draw conclusions about how big this problem actually is. It is too unclear to what extent glare is a factor in the event of a traffic accident. Research will have to be done into this.
Glare from car lighting does not occur out of the blue. The subject was discussed years ago. The RDW sounded the alarm in 2020 by calling for a stricter MOT.
In many cases, motorists can already take action themselves. Adjust the lighting properly (hi Tesla Model Y), or have it adjusted. This prevents dangerous situations and blinding someone else with your headlights is simply extremely irritating. So, fix that!
