It is the 3rd defense request that the Supreme Court minister rejects; Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, 38 years old, has been in prison since March 2023
The minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes returned, on Friday (September 27, 2024), to deny the release of hairdresser Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, aged 38, accused of spray-painting the statue “A Justiça”, which is located in front of the headquarters of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília, during the extremist acts of the 8th of January.
It is the 3rd request for release filed by Débora’s defense that Moraes rejects. The hairdresser has been in prison since March 2023. She was detained by PF (Federal Police) in the 8th phase of the Lesa Pátria operation, which targeted participants in the acts. However, the complaint only came at the beginning of July 2024.
In the decision, Moraes states that Débora, who has 2 minor children, presents “social danger”. Furthermore, the Supreme Court minister says that the conduct attributed to the hairdresser is “serious”.
The PGR denounced Débora for the following crimes: armed criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat, with the use of a flammable substance, against the Union’s property and with considerable damage to the victim and deterioration of listed heritage.
It has not been disclosed so far whether Débora entered any public building and whether she participated in other depredations or whether she was just in Praça dos Três Poderes, an open place. Nor was there any evidence presented that she was armed during the protests.
In a note, lawyer Helio Júnior said that they received Moraes’ decision “with deep indignation”. Said the hairdresser “faces the pain of separation from her children and the weight of a system devoid of empathy”.
Read the full note from Débora’s defense:
“It is with deep indignation that we come to the public to denounce the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who denied Débora’s release. This determination represents a serious violation of human rights and reflects clear political persecution. Pure perversity!
Débora is not a criminal, but a dedicated mother and an honest hairdresser, without any criminal record. Understanding that this is a “dangerous” woman is an attempt by the system to silence her and perpetuate injustice.
Currently, Débora faces the pain of separation from her children and the weight of a system devoid of empathy. His arrest violates the democratic rule of law and highlights the perverse relationship between politics and justice.
This decision that kept Débora in prison will be appealed and we hope that justice will be reestablished.”
