The uncle had seen Serena Mollicone arguing with a blond boy on the day of her disappearance. This is supported by Mariapia Fraioli, a witness heard in the hearing for the first time before the Court of Assizes of Appeal in Rome.
“I returned home in the early afternoon of June 2nd and my uncle Carmine Belli was at home: I asked him did you know who disappeared. He said no. Then I showed him a flyer with Serena's photo that we had for research – he said -. He told me that he had seen her on Friday morning arguing in front of the Chioppetelle bar with a blond boy and that she was crying. He said it's really her. For this reason you invited him to go to the barracks to say that he had seen her”.
The man was sighted on the morning of June 1, 2001, the day of Serena Mollicone's disappearance and death. “He said Serena was wearing black pants and a red shirt. She said of the boy that he was blond and as tall as Serena,” he said.
Laura Ricci, Marco Mottola's ex-girlfriend, also took the witness stand. According to the woman, Mottola – accused of the murder together with his father, the former commander of the Arce police station, and his mother – used her as an alibi. The carabinieri Francesco Suprano and Vincenzo Quadrale are also accused in the trial.
“I remember Marco Mottola, with whom I have been together since 2002, almost a year after Serena's murder, as a boy who let everything slide over him and was almost incapable of reacting violently even to provocations. In my opinion he was not capable of killing. The only time I saw him worried and sorry was when he and his family left Arce. Marco smoked, in addition to normal cigarettes, also hashish and marijuana. Marco Mottola asked me for a telephone card, which belonged to him. I was 17 at the time. After some time I thought I had been used to provide him with an alibi and exploited by him.”
