The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the world’s first graduate-level university specialized in artificial intelligence research, announced its intention to conclude a strategic cooperation agreement with IBM (NYSE: IBM). Officials from both institutions include a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing basic artificial intelligence research, as well as accelerating the pace of scientific innovations capable of discovering the potential of artificial intelligence in order to help find the best solutions to a set of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
In this regard, His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, said: “Cooperation with IBM to establish a center of research excellence in the field of artificial intelligence is a qualitative step that confirms the leading position. The first university of its kind in the world for artificial intelligence, which was established in the UAE. We are confident that this partnership will enhance the capabilities of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and its ability to contribute to achieving comprehensive and sustainable economic development in the country. We look forward to this partnership’s contribution to making a real impact in various important sectors such as healthcare, biotechnology, digital and financial services, in addition to preparing and training talents and cadres with qualitative skills commensurate with the efforts made by the UAE to develop technologies and solutions for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
During a special event held on the occasion of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Professor Eric Zing, President of Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, gave a short speech, along with Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer at IBM; Saad Touma, General Manager of IBM in the Middle East and Africa. Subsequently, the agreement was signed by Sultan Al-Hajji, Vice President for Public Affairs and Alumni Relations at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence; Wael Abdoush, General Manager of IBM in the Gulf and Levant region.
Professor Eric Zing, President of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, said: “We are honored to establish a center of research excellence in the field of artificial intelligence in cooperation with (IBM) as part of this agreement. We look forward to collaborating with IBM to expand the access of faculty and university students to the training programs and technologies necessary to achieve our research goals.”
For his part, Saad Touma, general manager for IBM Middle East and Africa, said: “This collaboration will help advance AI innovation, which is critical to the future of business and society. With this partnership, we will bring together some of the brightest minds in the sector and academia alike, while cementing IBM’s commitment to enriching knowledge and honing skills in areas of great importance to the ambitious development path in the UAE, where the use of pioneering technologies such as artificial intelligence is a top priority. ».
The establishment of a new center of research excellence in the field of artificial intelligence at the university’s campus in Masdar City embodies one of the main pillars of this collaboration. The center will harness the talents of IBM researchers, in cooperation with the faculty and students at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, and will focus primarily on advancing basic and applied research objectives.
Furthermore, this initiative seeks to develop, test and nurture a range of technologies that harness the capabilities of AI to address civic, social and business challenges. This cooperation also aims to provide real-world applications, especially in the fields of natural language processing, as well as artificial intelligence applications that seek to enhance climate action efforts, support sustainability, and accelerate innovation and pioneering discoveries in the field of healthcare.
IBM will provide training programs and targeted technologies under the umbrella of this initiative, which supports the university’s vision to consolidate its position as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence technology and its applications for the benefit of society and business.
