He narrowly qualified for the semi-finals, in which he went on to the final with authority. In the previous days he had said that he needed a fast race and he had it to show that he is one of the great middle-distance runners in the world. He was won by Britain’s Jake Wightman, who surprised the favourite, Norwegian Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who finished second. Katir returned the Spanish midfielder to the forefront of the showcase, after Reyes Esteve also won bronze in Seville in 1999.
Katir hung the second medal for Spain after the one achieved on Monday by Asier Martínez, also bronze, in the final of 110 meters hurdles.
