The man from Muleño beats Adel Mechaal in an exciting race finale and wins the gold in Nerja. The one from Aljucer ‘flies’ to climb to the top and revalidate the title
They ‘threatened’ to do so. And what if they did. The athletes Mohamed Katir and Sergio López Barranco were proclaimed champions of Spain this Saturday in the 5,000 and 100 meter tests in the open-air National that takes place in the Malaga town of Nerja.
The one from Mula beat Adel Mechaal in an exciting race finish, which in the last meters turned into a duel between both athletes. Patience, confidence and physical power. Those three weapons were the ones that led Mo Katir to win gold in one of the events highlighted in red on the calendar at the beginning of the season. From the middle of the test, the athlete from Muleño led the race and barely left a gap for his rivals. With a time of 13 minutes and 43 seconds, Mula’s was enough to take the victory.
Adel Mechaal and Katir promised a show this Saturday in Nerja. And they complied. The Catalan and the Muleño fought one-on-one at the end of the test, but the one from the Region of Murcia imposed his law to climb to the highest step and win the gold medal.
«I come from a brutal slump. I had low defenses, but thanks to the nutritionists I have been able to be here. I’m very happy. I’m going to try to show my face in the European. I hope to make my family and my people -Mula- enjoy tomorrow in the final of 1,500 meters”, said an exhausted Katir at the end of the race.
López Barranco ‘flies’ in Nerja
Sergio López Barranco, from Aljuce, showed why he was one of the favorites this Saturday in the 100 meter dash of the Spanish Championship. The Murcian ‘flew’ over the blue Nerja track to overtake his rivals and cross the finish line in first position and retain the title.
Little more than 10 seconds (10:30) López Barranco needed to secure the victory this Saturday. But it was for a few thousandths, since, as happened with Katir, the race of the Murcian had a very even end. Bernat Canet was the one who staggered the victory in the last meters, but this time Sergio López Barranco was faster, who once again demonstrates that he is the present and the future in national athletics is his.
