In a recent article published on Famitsu the 20 years since the release of Ico in Japan and, among the various interviews collected, there is also that of Hidetaka Miyazaki who confesses that without that title there would never have been Dark Souls. The father of the famous saga confessed that he approached the videogame world thanks to this puzzle game.
Recently Dark Souls took home the best game of all time award, but this incredible title would never have been born without the presence of Ico, game developed by Team Ico and published by Sony exclusively for PlayStation 2. Inside the article there are many other testimonials, such as those of Masahiro Sakurai, Suda 51, Neil Druckmann and Guillermo del Toro.
Miyazaki himself reveals who knew the game by chance, which immediately captivated him thanks to its history and dynamics, which made it one of the most famous and well-known titles of the PlayStation 2 console. The mechanics, puzzles and the presence of a completely invented language have made this game a real and own pearl, which Sony decided to remaster, together with Shadow of the Colossus, for PlayStation 3.
Regarding his experience, Miyazaki states:
On a personal note, after graduation and starting a new job I was away from games for a while when I happened to play Ico at a friend’s house on his advice, it was an experience and a story beautiful and unprecedented that I had never imagined, and I am very sorry for my friend, but I was quietly moved and silent. And that’s when I left the company I was working for at the time and started working for FromSoftware. I am not exaggerating when I say it was the game that changed my life, and I am proud that it was Ico and that it was Mr. Ueda’s game. Congratulations on Ico’s 20th anniversary, Mr. Ueda. As a fan, I can’t wait to see his new games. The mythology that runs through his games, including Ico, has always been a goal of mine.
