Aosta – On the Mont Blanc massif the bad weather is relentless and rescuers are unable to reach the two Italian mountaineers, Sara Stefanelli and Andrea Galimberti, she from Liguria and he from Lombardy, who raised the alarm on Saturday afternoon, explaining that they were stuck at around 4,600 metres and were at risk of hypothermia.
Stuck on the Giant’s Tooth, the rescue attempt by helicopter
“Due to the weather situation there are no developments at the moment”, they explain to Ansa from the Peloton de gendarmerie de haute montagne in Chamonix (France). Impossible searches, therefore, even for two more Korean climbers missing on the “roof of Europe” since Saturday.
The French gendarmes-rescuers are in constant contact with the Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue. In case of a clearing the helicopters are ready to take off from both sides of Mont Blanc. In Chamonix it has been raining since this morning while in Courmayeur the weather conditions are better: on the summit of Mont Blanc however bad weather is forecast all day. It is therefore impossible to arrive either by helicopter or by land.
At 4,750 metres above sea level on Colle Major, on the Bianco, the temperature last night dropped to over -12 degrees according to data collected by the Arpa Valle d’Aosta weather station. The hope is that the two Italians managed to shelter from the cold and the storm by digging a deep hole in the snow or by lowering themselves into a crevasse. The nearest refuge is Capanna Vallot, at 4,362 meters. Their phones are off.
