It’s been 10 years since that tragic Malaysian Sunday that took Marco Simoncelli away. And today the link between the Misano World Circuit and the driver from Coriano, to whom the Romagna track is named, has become even closer and more intense.
On the little hill inside the curve 8, formerly known as Quercia, “The oak of Sic” has been planted. A tree that dad Paolo has always remembered Marco himself, with its mighty trunk and a thick bush that recalls its foliage, which has now become an icon for all motorcycle enthusiasts, but not only.
Because Simoncelli was a character who had managed to “pierce” beyond the world of MotoGP, and perhaps this is also why everyone saw him a bit as the natural heir of his great friend Valentino Rossi, and who after 10 years ever since he left us he always manages to get a smile when it comes to him. Maybe a little bitter, but still a smile.
The ceremony was attended by the father Paolo, the mother Rossella, but also the CEO of Dorna Carmelo Ezpeleta, as well as some family friends who wanted to make their affection felt in this very exciting moment.
“I really like this oak. I planted one myself in the garden, because I think this tree represented it perfectly. A centuries-old, robust, sincere plant. He was all of this … Maybe he was nicer than a tree. , however, he could have waited a little longer to go … “, Paolo Simoncelli said a little later to the microphones of Sky Sport MotoGP HD. “This was a gift that I really enjoyed. Together with the lighting of the flame tonight in Coriano is the event I cared about the most”.
Valentino also then made a brief comment to the satellite broadcaster: “The idea of the oak for Sic is beautiful, that tree recalls Marco’s crown, it is a beautiful symbol. Ten years have passed, but it seems to me that the last time I saw Sic two months ago. Sometimes I dream about it, sometimes I think about it a lot and it’s a really nice feeling. “
