The Community demands from the central Executive the powers of Coasts and Ramblas to have full control over nitrate discharges
The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, demanded last night from the Executive of the nation the immediate dredging of the Marchamalo gorge, “for the recovery of its draft”, as an urgent and “drastic” measure to allow the influx of clean water from the Mediterranean to the Mar Menor and alleviate the lack of oxygen in the lagoon. After concluding the Extraordinary Government Council that he convened on the occasion of this serious environmental crisis, the head of the Murcian Government announced that he would order the displacement to the area, on the same night of this Friday, of the heavy machinery necessary to open that ‘gate’ , so that the dredging works can begin as soon as the Ministry for Ecological Transition gives a hypothetical green light to the measure, and warned that, in case it does not respond to the request, it will go to Justice “to be she is the one that forces him to proceed, or allows us to do so by means of the most precautionary action ».
López Miras affirmed that the decision to demand the opening of the gorge to allow the entry of water from the Mediterranean, an option already considered on previous occasions and that has always generated great controversy due to its impact on salinity, had been adopted after hearing to the Scientific Committee, which, the president assured, has agreed that it is a “more than necessary” measure. “It is one of the few measures that experts tell us can be taken in the short term.” Precisely hours before said committee had met to study the data collected in recent days on the state of the Mar Menor.
The announcement provoked an immediate reaction from Vox, who thanked him for taking, “although late”, the measures that Santiago Abascal’s party “has been asking for since the beginning of the legislature” for the Mar Menor, and encouraged him to continue with other of your program.
Announces a decree law that will prohibit the entry of water through the Albujón ravine, in order to pressure the CHS
Contaminants for 50 years
The head of the autonomous Executive announced another decision of great political significance, consisting of demanding from the State the transfer to the Autonomous Community of the competences in matters of Coasts and the hydrological basin, in order that the Government of the Region of Murcia take full control over the actions in the boulevards that discharge nutrients of agricultural origin to the Mar Menor and on the groundwater level of the aquifer. One of these boulevards is Albujón, from which he recalled that “every day 30 million liters of fresh water are poured into the Mar Menor and 5 tons of nutrients.” In fact, López Miras pointed out that scientists have assured him that the contaminated water that is in the aquifer and that is discharged through it is, today, enough to be producing discharges continuously “for the next 50 years.” «I don’t want to have my hands tied in the Mar Menor anymore. If they are going to point me out as the person responsible – for the degradation of the Mar Menor -, I must be, “he said.
The third decision of the Executive consisted in the approval of a decree that will declare the prohibition of discharges through the aforementioned Rambla del Albujón, a measure of impossible immediate compliance in practice, but with which it is intended to force the Hydrographic Confederation of the Segura (CHS) to act with the utmost urgency so as not to incur an illegality.
“We are not going to tolerate a single drop of nutrient-rich water continuing to enter the Rambla del Albujón,” said López Miras. This decree law will be processed “immediately.”
The president pointed out that his “Government has done everything in its power to save and protect the Mar Menor, although it is obvious that it has been insufficient.” Although he exempted himself from all responsibility in the environmental crisis: “I am very clear that this is not a problem that has been generated by this regional government and I also have a great deal that it will be me, and this Executive, the one who is going to solve it.”
