Last Weeks of Pride events have been overshadowed by a mass shooting outside a gay bar in Norway at the end of June, in which two people died and more than 20 were injured.

Oslo was celebrating Pride week at the time of the shooting, and the incident also raised concerns about the safety of Pride events organized elsewhere. Laurila identifies with the concerns, even though she considers the acts that happened in the small town to be mischief by young people.

In Lapua, the organizers of the event have been able to prepare for the opposition during Pride week. That’s why some of the events are guarded by orderlies, who are also involved in the parade and park party organized on Saturday.

“I believe that the opposition to such events is due to prejudice and ignorance. Not many Pride weeks have been celebrated in South Ostrobothnia. We haven’t encountered enough diversity and different people,” Laurila describes.

Lapuan the case has also sparked discussion on social media. Among other things, the Minister of Education Lee Andersson (left) posted an update on the topic on his Twitter account.

“There is hatred and violence against minorities in Finland as well. Human rights and security belong to everyone. There is still work to be done for this,” he writes.
