Minneapolis residents voted against the abolition of the police – the reform project failed in a referendum. Writes about it Associated Press…
According to RIA News, more than 56 percent of voters opposed the abolition of the city police. About 43 percent voted for the initiative, but at least 51 percent of the vote was required to approve it. That being said, some black activists expressed against this initiative even before the vote.
The referendum considered amendments to the Minneapolis statute to replace the police department with the Department of Public Safety (Department of Public Safety). A corresponding proposal was made after the death of a black resident of the city of George Floyd, who died as a result of arrest with the use of suffocation.
This happened in the spring of 2020. The case became a resonance, and Minneapolis became the epicenter of a nationwide movement to reform the law enforcement system. Mass demonstrations took place on the streets of American and European cities, the participants of which called for the dissolution of the police.
On April 21, 2021, a jury found Derek Chauvin – one of the police officers who detained Floyd – guilty of murder.
