It was certainly not convenient for Minister Karien van Gennip to use the word ‘banlieues’† The social affairs minister was thrown over half the country on Tuesday after she said unemployed young people from the poor suburbs of Paris are welcome to solve our staff shortages.
For months now, this minister has been telling a fairly consistent story about the increasing staff shortages in the Netherlands. When there is a shortage, employers must first look at the more than 1 million unemployed in their own country. And only then to candidates from the European Union. A waiter from Spain, a strawberry picker from Poland or a cook from France – they are welcome† Provided it is properly housed, of course.
