The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al-Dahhak, stressed that World Environment Day this year attaches special importance to combating desertification, which is a high priority for the UAE as a desert country, noting that the country is taking many measures to mitigate the risks of drought and improve food security.

She added: “This year’s theme, which is land rehabilitation, combating desertification, and drought resistance, addresses vital aspects of climate action. The effects of regional deterioration cast a shadow on various vital sectors, including energy, infrastructure, health and agriculture. The UAE has witnessed the impact of climate change on its environments directly, and we are fully aware of the magnitude of the risks that await us if we do not take urgent action.”
She said, “In the UAE, we have implemented several strategies to contribute to achieving Goal 15 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Life on Land); These strategies include the National Adaptation Plan and the National Biodiversity Strategy, through which we work to protect our lands by halting the deterioration of areas and rehabilitating them.”
She added, “The UAE is one of the few countries that has expanded its mangrove cover, and we are helping other countries to follow suit in this field. We have set an ambitious goal to plant an additional 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, and we are moving forward on our way to achieving this goal.”
