1. Why are you overhauling the motor vehicle tax and the petrol excise?
CDA minister Van Rij: ,,Motorists are increasingly opting for an electric car. And that’s a good thing, because as a cabinet we are encouraging this because of the climate. But it does mean that government revenues from car taxes will decline over time, mainly due to declining revenues from fuel excise taxes. This year we will raise about 14 billion euros. If we want to maintain this government revenue, we must introduce a new and future-proof system. Soon all motorists, including electric drivers, will pay tax again depending on how much they use the road. In this way, public facilities can also be paid for in the future, such as care, education and the roads themselves, including their maintenance.”
