The answer given to a question by some Forza Italia senators opens up new scenarios: “Individual institutes can decide thanks to the principles of autonomy”
Rome – It is not possible to imagine a regulatory intervention to reintroduce the teaching of Latin in middle schools, however, if approved by the teaching staff within the scope of the autonomy recognized to individual institutions, it can be an appropriate choice “to enhance the heritage of the Greek and Latin tradition, so as to transmit it to female students, not only as a heritage of the past, but as a key to interpretation and reading of contemporaneity “. This was written by the Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi, responding to a question presented by the senators of Forza Italia Antonio Barboni, Anna Maria Bernini, Nazario Pagano, Urania Papatheu and Fulvia Caligiuri.
The Azzurri exponents, after recalling that «starting from the 1977/78 school year the teaching of the Latin language in the Italian middle school was abolished with law no. 348 of 1977 “asked the holder of the dicastery in viale Trastevere to” evaluate the possibility of reintroducing “this subject” in lower secondary schools, not only in light of the requests of various scholars, but above all recognizing the great educational value of this discipline , functional to the improvement of communication in the Italian language and to the interpersonal, social and citizenship skills, fundamental for the growth path of our students “.
Responding to the question, the minister “agrees to acknowledge the educational value of classical languages essential to understand the present and to develop the fundamental knowledge that lead to reflection and a broader knowledge of the modern world and society, to the critical spirit and reasoning necessary for the emancipation of pupils, for European citizenship and for the defense of common values ”.
However, explains the representative of the Executive, “a possible reintroduction of this discipline would require a regulatory intervention of a regulatory nature that would affect the order, organization and teaching of the lower secondary school with a remodeling of the entire study plan and related timetable “. In any case, «it is important to consider that the teachers’ colleges can, within the prerogatives granted by the Regulations on the autonomy of scholastic institutions, activate teachings and strengthen disciplines, up to a maximum limit of 20% of the hours of lessons. In the light of this reference framework, it can therefore be assumed that the three-year plan of the educational offer of lower secondary schools may also include the teaching of Latin, if appropriately approved “.
“In this way, starting from lower secondary schools – concludes Bianchi – it will be possible to enhance the legacy of the Greek and Latin tradition so as to pass it on to female students, not only as a heritage of the past, but as a key to interpretation and reading of contemporaneity “.
