Florida, United States.- More than a million customers were without power in Florida when Hurricane Milton hit the state, according to PowerOutage.us.
At 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Florida reported 1,115,813 customers without electricity. North Carolina had 71,172 power outages at the same time, while Georgia had almost 39,000.
Tampa Electric, Florida Power & Light Company and Duke Energy reported some of the largest outages as the hurricane made landfall about 109 kilometers south of Tampa. Some power lines were downed earlier in the day by tornadoes that formed in the hurricane’s rain band.
Many Florida energy companies warned their customers in advance to prepare for power outages caused by the storm. Duke Energy Florida said in a statement Wednesday that it was placing resources along the outside of the hurricane’s projected path to respond to power outages as soon as weather and other conditions allow.
There are more than 11.5 million electricity customers in Florida, according to PowerOutage.us.
