Millions of people were confined to their homes in China on Monday (2) as the country tries to contain the biggest outbreak of coronavirus in months with large-scale testing and travel restrictions.
China reported on Monday 55 new cases of locally transmitted coronaviruses. The outbreak of the fast-spreading delta variant has now reached more than 20 cities and more than a dozen provinces.
Governments in major cities, including Beijing, organized tests for millions of people, while cordoning off residential areas and quarantining the contacts of infected people.
The city of Zhuzhou (centre), in Hunan province, on Monday ordered more than 1.2 million people to remain at home under strict isolation for the next three days, while carrying out a testing and testing campaign. vaccination throughout the locality.
“The situation remains bleak and complicated,” the Zhuzhou government said.
Beijing had so far managed to reduce local cases to virtually zero. But the recent outbreak, linked to an outbreak in Nanjing in which nine international airport cleaners tested positive on July 20, has sparked more than 360 cases in the past two weeks.
In Zhangjiajie, a tourist town near Zhuzhou, an outbreak was reported last month among spectators at a theater, who then took the virus to their homes across the country.
Zhangjiajie ordered the confinement of its 1.5 million people on Friday.
Beijing blocked the entry of tourists during the summer travel season (northern hemisphere, winter in Brazil).
After the discovery of some cases among residents returning from Zhangjiajiem, only “essential travelers” with negative tests will be allowed to enter Beijing.
New cases were also reported on Monday in Hainan, a popular tourist destination, as well as in flood-ravaged Henan province, the country’s health authorities said.
