Extreme weather is once again claiming many lives in the USA. Entire towns are under water, streets have simply been washed away. US President Biden must prepare for devastating images.
Washington – With millions of people affected, US President Joe Biden wants to travel to the region devastated by storm “Helene” on Wednesday. In the state of North Carolina, Biden explained that he would speak to representatives of the emergency authority and also get an idea of the extent of the damage from the air. He also wants to travel to the affected states of Georgia and Florida “as soon as possible”.
The number of deaths has now risen to at least 130 people in a total of six states, as the US broadcaster CNN reported. The authorities fear that the number of victims could continue to increase. Biden also spoke of around 600 people who could not currently be reached. “There is no way to contact them because there is no cell phone reception,” Biden added. At the beginning of the week, millions of those affected were still suffering from the severe consequences of the storm.
“Helene” made landfall on the Gulf Coast in northwest Florida on Thursday evening (local time) as a hurricane in the second highest category with wind speeds of up to 225 kilometers per hour. Helene later weakened into a tropical storm and continued north over the Appalachians before dissipating completely. It brought heavy rain – entire towns were flooded and streets were washed away. Numerous people were trapped in their homes. dpa
