American millionaire Robert Durst, 78, has been charged with the death of his former wife, Kathleen McCormack, who disappeared in 1982. On Thursday, the real estate mogul was sentenced to life in prison for killing a friend, Susan Berman. Durst accidentally confessed to that murder in an HBO documentary, when he thought the microphones were off.
Durst allegedly shot Berman in the head to prevent her from giving testimony about the murder of his first wife, McCormack, after she had previously helped him cover it up.
The millionaire is a suspect in his wife’s disappearance case, but was never prosecuted – until now. The charges for the murder of McCormack were filed last Tuesday, the Public Prosecution Service confirmed today. It said it had “no further comment” at this time.

McCormack was 29 when she disappeared, on January 31, 1982. Her body was never found. At the request of her family, she was officially pronounced dead in 2017. Durst divorced McCormack in 1990, citing “abandonment.”
The new murder trial is expected to take several weeks. During the trial for the murder of Berman, which led to a conviction last week, the millionaire was largely in a wheelchair. Durst struggles with several health problems. According to one of his lawyers, he was recently hospitalized after he tested positive for Covid-19. He would be on a ventilator.
