Group was heading to vote in the 1st round in Estirão do Ecuador (AM) when the vessel sank in the early hours of this Sunday (6.Oct)
The Amazon Military Command rescued 23 voters in the early hours of this Sunday (6.Oct.2024), after the sinking of a vessel in the Community of Palinares, on the Javari River, Amazonas. The group was on its way to Estirão do Ecuador (AM), near the border with Peru, to vote in the municipal elections. The location is approximately 2 thousand kilometers from Manaus.
The rescue was carried out by soldiers from the 4th Special Border Platoon. In statementthe Military Command reported that the voters were taken to the platoon base, where they received medical care before returning to their homes.
“The rapid action highlights the importance and readiness of the military in the region, marking the presence of the State in the Javari Valley, in a position to maintain surveillance and sovereignty, in addition to collaborating in the fight against cross-border and environmental crimes in isolated areas of the Western Amazon”it says.
