A Russian military plane crashed in a populated area in the city of Yeisk on the coast of the Azov Sea near Ukraine, Russian agencies quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying.
“At the site of the crash of a Sukhoi-34 plane in the yard of a residential area, the plane’s fuel caught fire,” the ministry said, while pictures on social networks taken by witnesses show a massive fire in an apartment building.
The Russian agencies quoted the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as saying that the fire spread to an apartment building, which caught fire in five of its nine floors.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the fighter pilots were able to exit, while it indicated that the flight was a training.
For his part, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region, Benjamin Kontradyev, said that “all fire and rescue units in the region are working to put out the fire.”
Yeisk lies on the Sea of Azov, opposite the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which was devastated by bombing and a long siege in the first months of the Russian offensive.
