Forty days after taking office, Javier Milei's government announced a reduction in spending on social assistance in Argentina. The new management decided to cut more than 27 thousand people from the list of beneficiaries after identifying irregularities in payments.
The information was released by the Ministry of Human Capital this Saturday. According to the ministry, the measure is the result of a data check and the “compliance with requirements” of people registered in two social programs whose objective is to provide temporary assistance to people without jobs: the Enhance Work and the Boost Employment.
In total, 27,208 people were excluded from the list of beneficiaries. According to the government, the measure should save 2 billion pesos (approximately R$12 million) per year.
Still according to the ministry, some of the people removed from the programs received pensions, others lived outside the country and others had already died. It also included self-employed workers and people who own a car that is less than ten years old — which is outside the program rules.
Javier Milei was elected in November on a platform of state reform and reduced state spending. He took office on December 10th. At the moment, he is trying to negotiate with Congress the approval of a package of measures that has, among other objectives, the deregulation of the economy.
