During his first trip as head of state to Israel, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, met this Tuesday (6) with Israeli president Isaac Herzog.
At the meeting, Milei expressed his solidarity with the country for the terrorist attack suffered in October, which was perpetrated by the terrorist group Hamas and killed more than 1,200 people. The Argentine president also reaffirmed his support for “Israel's right to self-defense” in the ongoing war that was triggered by Hamas attacks and demanded “the release of all hostages” who are still under the control of the Palestinian terrorist group, including those of Argentine nationality.
According to information from the newspaper Clarin, still at the meeting, Milei also confirmed his desire to move Argentina's diplomatic headquarters from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recognizing it as the capital of Israel. Furthermore, he added that he already has a decree ready to declare Hamas as a terrorist organization, following the example of Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), who did the same with the terrorist group Hezbollah in 2019.
On his X account (formerly Twitter), Herzog thanked Milei for his visit and called him “a great leader” and “a true friend of the State of Israel and the Jewish people.”
Milei, who is Catholic but practices Judaism, also visited the Western Wall, where he was moved and even cried. At the scene, he left a message and prayed and said that he fulfilled a promise he had made during the election campaign.
The Argentine president is expected to continue his agenda in Israel this Wednesday (7), when he will meet with the country's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. He is also expected to visit one of the kibbutz attacked by Hamas and talk to family members of those kidnapped.
