The president of Argentina, the far-right Javier Milei, does not stop seeking diplomatic conflicts. After his insults against his peers from Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, this Friday it was the turn of the President of the Government of Spain, the socialist Pedro Sánchez. In a statement released by the presidential office, Milei launched a string of invectives against Sánchez, including putting “the unity of the Kingdom in danger” after agreeing “with separatists,” putting “Spanish women at risk by allowing the illegal immigration of those “They threaten their physical integrity,” and apply “socialist policies that bring poverty and death.” He also told her that he “has more important problems to deal with, such as the corruption accusations against his wife,” Begoña Gómez. The attack occurs two weeks before the Argentine’s trip to Spain. The leader of La Libertad Avanza plans to participate on May 18 in a meeting organized by VOX, Europa Viva 24, the great mass event with which the Spanish far-right wants to launch its campaign for the European elections on June 9. This visit, his first to Spain as president, does not include meetings with Sánchez or the King. The origin of the statement, according to the note itself, was to respond to the statements of the Spanish Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, who had alluded on Friday to the possible “ingestion of substances” by Milei during a relaxed talk with students.
“The Office of the President repudiates the slander and insults formulated by the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of Spain, Óscar Puente, against Javier Milei,” the official statement begins. But then he goes deeper: “Pedro Sánchez’s government has more important problems to deal with, such as the corruption accusations leveled against his wife, an issue that even led him to consider his resignation. For the good of the Kingdom of Spain, we hope that justice acts quickly to clarify such a corruption scandal that directly affects the stability of your Nation and, consequently, relations with our country.” This newspaper contacted the Spanish Embassy in Buenos Aires on Friday night, but did not receive a response.
The statement from the Government of Argentina adds that “Pedro Sánchez has endangered the unity of the Kingdom, agreeing with separatists and leading to the dissolution of Spain; He has put Spanish women at risk by allowing the illegal immigration of those who threaten their physical integrity; and he has endangered the middle class with his socialist policies that only bring poverty and death.” The document concludes: “We Argentines choose to change the model that brought us misery and decadence. The same model that the Spanish Socialist Workers Party applies in its country. We hope that the Spanish people will soon choose to live in freedom again.”
In a colloquium on communication and social networks at the PSOE School of Government, in a relaxed dialogue with the public, Minister Puente had advised the attendees: “Be yourself, without fear, there are very bad people who, being themselves, have reached the top, Milei or Trump.” Then he referred again to the Argentine president, in particular his performance in last year’s election campaign: “I saw Milei on TV and I said, as I was listening to him, I don’t know in what state, prior to ingestion or after ingestion.” intake of what substances and he came out to say that and I said, it is impossible for him to win the elections, he dug his grave. Well no”.
In almost five months since his inauguration, Milei has already accumulated a long list of diplomatic controversies. The Argentine called his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “communist and corrupt”; “ignorant” to the Mexican Andrés Manuel López Obrador; and “terrorist murderer” of Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia.
In the case of Brazil, the controversy was partially settled with a letter from the Argentine Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, which has not yet been responded to from Brasilia. Colombia finally put an end to the conflict after a communication with Mondino and a call to “work for the well-being” of the Argentine and Colombian diasporas. López Obrador, meanwhile, responded in person to his Argentine counterpart. “Milei claimed that I am ‘ignorant’ because I called him a ‘conservative brat’. You are right: I still do not understand how Argentines, being so intelligent, voted for someone who is not correct, who despises the people and who dared to accuse his countryman [el Papa] Francisco of being a ‘communist’ and ‘representative of the Evil One on earth’. The Mexican president, after Milei’s insults, received the support of the opposition, despite the fact that Mexico is in the middle of the electoral process.
