Northern Italy is hit by heavy rains. Milan is particularly affected, where entire parts of the city are under water.
Milan – Northern Italy has been hit by heavy rain for several days, with Lombardy particularly affected. In some areas, the fire brigade is constantly on duty because several rivers can no longer withstand the floods.
Severe storms in Italy: rivers overflow their banks – floods hit Milan
According to current reports, the Lambro and Seveso rivers have burst their banks. This led to numerous floods, particularly in Milan. The districts of Niguarda Bicocca, Isola and Pontelambro were flooded because the dams could no longer withstand the water pressure of the Seveso. According to reports from rainews.it and other Italian media, the floods led to several road closures as mainly highways were flooded.
Tram lines 5 and 7 had to limit or reroute their operations. The Ponte Lambro district, where the Lambro River overflowed, was most affected by the rains and their effects. There were many fallen ones there trees, which led to numerous operations by the local police. Milan only had to contend with similarly severe flooding last October.
Floods in northern Italy: water enters school bus
Around 100 technicians from a municipal company are also working in Milan. They are trying to cope with the storm crisis with 30 special vehicles and other equipment. The team is particularly concerned with the flood protection basin on the Seveso River, which can hold 275,000 cubic meters of water. It is reported that the pool was put into operation early Thursday morning (May 16). In addition to official reports, videos of the floods appeared on social media over the course of Wednesday.
In one of these videos, a school bus in the province of Brianza can be seen entering large amounts of water. The bus gradually filled with water, causing panic among the students. Many buildings in the province had to be evacuated, including schools and kindergartens.
In neighboring Lodigiano, people are also struggling with the persistent rain as the Sillaro river has overflowed its banks and flooded the first few houses. Last year, 36,000 people in northern Italy had to be evacuated from their homes due to storms. (rd)
