Miguel Herrera has been a controversial figure in Mexican soccer since before he was technical director. As a player, ‘El Piojo’ was characterized by acting impulsively and losing control in times of pressure. One of these outbursts caused him to miss out on the opportunity to play in the 1994 United States World Cup. The strong defense was warned by coach Miguel Mejía Barón, but he did not listen.
In the qualifying match against Honduras, held at the Azteca Stadium, Miguel Herrera got into a battle with catracho players that ended in an assault and a red card for ‘El Piojo’. Despite having been constant in the process, Mejía Barón decided to cut Herrera from the World Cup list due to this type of action.
Since then, ‘El Piojo’ has grown a lot as a coach, but he resents whoever was a strategist for the Mexican National Team. Herrera has reached the point of calling him a “sexual deviant” in 2013. Questioned about his current relationship with his former coach, the Tigres coach once again had harsh words against Mejía Barón.
“Miguel and I are not going to talk to each other. We are not going to greet each other, we are not going to talk to each other. He is not my friend. I did not have a good relationship with him. It seems to me that as a person he failed me (…) At the time I learned a lot from him. I close my circle at the moment I say: ‘I don’t hate him or anything’. We will be together on a court or not. He does his job and I respect him. I follow my path, I follow my life. I’m not going to insult him. He has his life, I have mine.”

Despite the years, it seems that Miguel Herrera still hasn’t forgiven Mejía Barón for leaving him out of the final list to compete in the World Cup in the United States.
