Eleven robbers wearing balaclavas and armed to the neck, an assault in the midst of the forging of democracy and a motive that has not yet been dispelled. This is how the assault on the Central Bank in Plaza de Catalunya, in Barcelona, was carried out. one of the most shocking robberies and which at the same time was quickly forgotten. On Saturday, May 23, 1981, an armed group enters the headquarters and leaves a message in a telephone booth: they demand the release of Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero and three other soldiers, who are in prison for their alleged involvement in the attempted assassination. coup d’état of 23-F, which occurred exactly three months before. If their demand was not met, the assailants threatened to blow up the building with the hostages inside. The matter changed from a robbery to a state matter in a matter of seconds. More than 300 hostages and no apparent way to resolve this matter.
The result of the assault was relatively satisfactory, since there was only one fatality, one injured, and the escape of one of the assailants. And although the real reasons why this assault occurred are unknown, Miguel Herrán puts himself in the shoes of one of them to try to find some more answer in ‘Assault on the Central Bank’the new Netflix series directed by Daniel Calparsoro that tries to reflect everything that happened during those hours.
Miguel Herrán, María Pedraza, Hovik Keuchkerian… One may think that he is in front of ‘La casa de papel’ again. And although Herrán returns to robberies, here he does it in a radically different way because chaos is pressing at all times and it is, in this case, a true story. «I was lucky enough to meet my character and delve a little into his story, his motives… Mystery completely surrounds the story, today there are many questions that remain unanswered and I think it is the key to the story. series,” the actor acknowledges to ABC.
One of the fundamental elements of the series is the context that surrounds the robbers at all times. The event occurs when democracy begins to be born in Spain. On the one hand, there is a desire for freedom, but at the same time there is fear of everything that can fall. «I do not believe that fiction has a moral duty to make historical memory. Yes, I think it is beautiful, that in addition to entertaining, it can put into context and bring issues that may seem far away to the new generations. For example, it is good to show everything we have achieved and where we have had to go through to get here, but I don’t think there is a moral duty to do so,” the actor acknowledges. Although he returns to the robberies, Miguel Herrán shows that this character has nothing to do with Río, his role in ‘La casa de papel’. «I think this is one of the most mature characters I could play to this day. TIt has many edges and nuances. It could have a second part. When in real life this man told me all the stories I was amazed. “I have been able to play few characters in my career that are so enjoyable and at the same time so real.”
The actor has a ten-year career behind him and recognizes that this work has nothing to do with other series he has done recently. «I am not very appreciative of the projects I do. I am not a person who gives flowers, nor do I give flowers to projects. It’s quite hard for me to see myself. I haven’t seen ‘La casa de papel’ or ‘Elite’. To this day I still can’t watch them because they are not the type of series or characters that I like. On the other hand, this one, I saw it in one afternoon.
