Colombian striker Miguel Borja agreed on Monday his contract with River Plate from Argentina to which he arrives with the difficult mission of replacing Julián Álvarez, acquired by the English Manchester City.
Borja, 29, sealed a bond for three seasons with the red band club, in a transfer for about seven million dollars, which includes what River will pay Junior de Barranquilla, a debt that the Colombian club had with the Brazilian Palmeiras and another percentage of the pass for the São Paulo club.
“Borja is already from River. He did the medical checkup,” River’s second vice president, Ignacio Villarroel, told La Red radio on Monday night.
The striker arrived in Buenos Aires after almost a month of negotiations. Before embarking for Argentina on Sunday, Borja had declared himself “grateful to God for the opportunity he gives me to be able to go to one of the best on the continent.”
“Borja is a striker for the national team, with a long history. We have suffered as a rival,” said River’s first vice president, Matías Patanian.
The ‘coffee grower’ attacker disembarks in Argentina at a good personal moment. During the first half of this year he played 27 games and scored 16 goals for Junior, being one of the top scorers in the Copa Sudamericana. In addition, coach Marcelo Gallardo will be able to dispose of Borja immediately and add him to a badly injured River, which has just lost 2-0 at home in the local tournament against the modest Godoy Cruz and is in the middle of the Professional League table.
His immediate objective is to enter at least the qualifying positions for the Copa Libertadores-2023. On Wednesday, Borja could at least be on the bench in the match against Barracas Central for the 16th round of the Argentine Cup, another objective that remains for the “millionaire” team for the remainder of the season.
In addition, he finds a River in urgent need of recovery after being unexpectedly eliminated by Vélez Sarsfield in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.
Borja will thus have his second stint in Argentine football. In his first cycle he was very young and played in the modest Olimpo de Bahía Blanca in the 2014 season. Borja’s arrival at the ‘Millionaire’ joins the recent ones of striker Lucas Beltrán and midfielder Rodrigo Aliendro. River also advances in negotiations for the Argentine winger Pablo Solari of the Chilean Colo Colo and the Paraguayan striker Gabriel Ávalos, of Argentinos Juniors.
