Migration UN Organization for Migration: At least 160 European aspirants drowned in the Mediterranean during the week

Two disasters in Libyan waters raised the number of casualties in the central Mediterranean in 2021 to nearly 1,500.

At least 160 migrants seeking to Europe have drowned in the Mediterranean over the past week, according to AFP.

Spokesman for the UN Organization for Migration (IOM) Safa Msehlin according to drowning deaths have occurred in Libyan coastal waters in two shipwreck.

On Friday a wooden migrant ship crashed at sea, says a British newspaper The Guardian. At least 102 migrants were killed in Turma and eight were rescued.

On Saturday, the Libyan Coast Guard found 62 bodies in the wake of another accident.

On the same day, the Coast Guard suspended the voyage of a third wooden ship. There were at least 210 people on board.

Central The Mediterranean route is the main route for those seeking access to Europe. The unstable situation in Libya provides a favorable environment for human traffickers, most of whom are destined for Italy.

“Nearly 1,500 migrants have died on this route this year,” spokesman Msehli said.
