With more than 3.6 million refugees left by the war in Ukraine, the help provided by host countries is vital for the integration of those who have been forced from their homes. Poland continues to be the largest recipient of the exodus, while other European countries welcome children on their first day of school.
With the flow of refugees into Poland, support in the country is crucial. A group of French firefighters arrived at the border to help with the reception work.
In Medyka is Gilles Theillard, a member of the Humanitarian Firefighters of France. “We adapt to the care they need: health, psychological help, we take care of the children and hydrate them. There were several cases of hypothermia and we are trying to help all of them for their well-being”, he says.
The firefighters also help in the transfer of luggage and the accompaniment to the shelters. They also guide those who want to continue their journey to other countries, to the nearest train stations.
Further from the Ukrainian borders, in Italy, schools receive refugee minors. The Temporary Protection scheme activated by the European Union allows children to access education in their host countries. With the permit, refugees can also obtain a residency and even apply for a job.
