At least seven migrants died in the sinking of a boat which took place this morning – Wednesday 30 June – about five miles from Lampedusa and one of the victims was a pregnant woman. The boat they were traveling on would suddenly overturn and many ended up in the sea.
Rescuers have recovered 48 survivors, seven lost their lives. Both the survivors and the bodies have already been taken to the Favarolo pier where they are about to disembark. On the spot, there is the police who will now try to reconstruct the dynamics of the tragedy.
In addition to the shipwreck that cost the lives of seven migrants, it was a night of landings that occurred in Lampedusa. I’m 256 people landed on the island, starting at 3.30, with four different boats. Three boats were rescued offshore, the fourth – with 6 Tunisians on board – managed to arrive, at around 7, directly in port.
There were also yesterday 4 landings on the island with a total of 136 people. The first 120 migrants, of various nationalities, were intercepted about 14 miles south of the island: they were on an 8-meter boat. The soldiers of the Guardia di Finanza transhipped them and left the “cart” adrift.
At 6.30 the 30 migrants who had been intercepted 12 miles by the Port Authority patrol boat Cp309 arrived at the Favarolo pier and shortly after another 100 arrived. Then, between Lampedusa and Lampione, the shipwreck was recorded: 7 i dead and 48 survivors. Now, after today’s landings, there are 338 guests on the island. Immigration is again at the center of the news, but not one of the priorities of the Draghi government.
