Total war “I doubt there will be”, neither Iran nor Hezbollah can do it, despite the huge blow suffered with the killing of Hassan Nasrallah. And the hope is that at this point Israel no longer deems a ground operation in Lebanon necessary. It is the opinion of Meir Litvak, professor of Middle Eastern history at Tel Aviv University, who comments with Adnkronos on the latest dramatic events, reiterating Israel’s right to eliminate the leader of Hezbollah.
“I doubt there will be an all-out war. I don’t think Iran wants a full-scale war with Israel, due to the high cost it would have for the Islamic Republic – he says, answering the question of whether Tehran can still afford not to respond – It has always been cautious in not getting directly involved and for this reason it has proxies”, such as Hezbollah, Hamas or the Houthis. “I doubt that Iran would risk its life of his men for the good of the Arabs,” insists Litvak.
As for the Party of God, now decapitated, “it will certainly want to take revenge, but a large-scale war is problematic because its chain of command has been seriously affected”, claims the professor, according to whom “Nasrallah’s death and previous attacks demonstrate how deep the penetration of Israeli intelligence is into their ranks. This should raise some suspicion within the organization, which must think carefully before arriving at a large-scale war.” “It is probable, although not certain, that Iran may seek to employ Shia militias in Iraq and Houthis in Yemen to attack Israel, but we are not yet at an all-out war,” Litvak says.
As for a possible Israeli ground operation in Lebanon, “I think Tel Aviv hopes that the actions taken so far will make an invasion unnecessary,” comments the Israeli expert.
Finally a comment on the killing of Nasrallah, who “had been waging a war of attrition against Israel since October 2023. He had launched attacks against Israel without provocation to help Hamas after the October 7 attack. He had attacked villages and cities Israelis for months.”
“Unless you argue that Israel has no right to defend itself under any circumstances because its very existence is illegitimate, there was no reason in the world not to kill it – says Litvak – Among other things, Hezbollah was responsible for the deaths of US and French soldiers in Lebanon”.
