The White House will be able to claim that it has always been at Netanyahu’s side
In almost 12 months the Middle Eastern war between HamasIsrael and the Shiite world starting from the so-called “party of God”, the Lebanese Hezbollah supported by Syria and in the last resort, the armed wing, by Iran (deus ex machine also of the international terrorism of the Houti militias of size in Yemen) has changed face at least three times.
The initial dismay and bewilderment aroused in the whole West– from the deadly, reprehensible and cowardly assault by Hamas on Israeli soil October 7, 2023 with thousands of deaths and hundreds of hostages deported to the Gaza Strip, deplored by the entire “free world”, it soon gave way to a widespread sense of disdain towards the – at times undoubtedly ruthless and brutal – actions of the Israeli army and its supreme leader, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accused – by many – of “genocide”, denounced – by some African countries (South Africa in the lead) – at the international criminal court in The Hague of “crimes against humanity ” and in free fall in the internal consensus.
A growing international and internal isolation that has repeatedly made people think of an imminent capitulation of Netanyahu also abused by an enraged and hopelessly impotent White House which saw a democratic electoral path soaked in the blood of innocent Palestinians compromised.
Then the turning point!
The decapitation of Hazbollah with the sensational and unthinkable elimination of its historic founder and absolute leader Hassan Nasrallahdisliked by the vast majority of Western countries and by all Sunni communities, has – once again, but this time in a disruptive way – distorted the face of war, blowing up the table: first of all, the table of hypocrisy.
Now that the “dirty work” is largely accomplished, it seems like a whole different story! Even in the United States, where – just a few weeks ago – concern was being cut with a knife, there is greater serenity given that the White House will be able to claim – with pride, in this part of the electoral campaign – to have always been at the side of Netanyahu with weapons that allowed Israel to decimate a terrorist faction which, in addition to keeping Lebanon in check, represented a threat to the entire Middle East.
Even the hostage game, which has been around for a while Netanyahu taken for granted, it seems to play another role. Now attention seems to shift to another new element for the entire Middle East: Israel as an element of security for all.
The State which for decades has been the main element of disturbance and anxiety for the Arab world in general and for the Palestinian world in particular, seems to be able to play, today and for everyone, an important fulcrum of liberation (and therefore of security) by the professionals of terror, be they the bloodthirsty snipers of Hamas who bear the burden of having betrayed the Palestinian cause and Yasser Arafat’s dream of two peoples for two states, be they the armed wings ofIran; of that “party” that really doesn’t seem to have anything in common with God.
Peace is undoubtedly still far away, but on the eve of the anniversary of that tragic 7 October a year ago, some glimmers of possible stabilization of the Middle East seems to be glimpsed. The stabilization of weapons and force, when it arrives, to be real and lasting, will necessarily have to give way to the integration of cultures and real collaboration.
Without trust and security, peace in the Middle East will always be a dream!
