In-game ads are very common in free-to-play mobile titles. However, in the realm of home consoles and on PC, this is basically non-existent. In this way, it is very striking that a new report has indicated that microsoft intends to integrate selected advertising in various free-to-play games.
According to a new report from Business Insider, Microsoft is working on a way to integrate advertising into free-to-play games on Xbox consoles. It is mentioned here that this would provide a new source of income for developers. The Redmond company would not keep a part of the advertising revenue generated. Examples of how ads can be placed include billboards in a racing game. This was what the company said about it:
“We are always looking for ways to improve the experience for players and developers, but we have nothing else to share.”
With this, the report mentions that advertising will be focused on a “private market”, so only select companies could put ads inside Fortnite either Call of Duty: Warzone, something that could reduce the anger of the players, since only advertising according to the game would be available. Finally, it has been mentioned that these plans would come into operation at the end of this year.
In related topics, insider reveals when the Xbox Game Pass family plan might be available. Similarly, Microsoft offers three free months of Game Pass on PC.
Editor’s note:
This is not the first time something like this has been attempted in the console market. Considering that cases such as the advertising of Battlefield 2042 was a flop, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft’s proposal has the same result, or the company’s endless funding allows them to implement this idea.
