For some years it has been rumored that Microsoft is exploring new possibilities for streaming that can offer Xbox Cloud Gaming through devices such as Chromecast. The first clue was Project Hobart. More recently, a code name “Keystone“appeared on an Xbox OS listing, fueling rumors that Microsoft is continuing to explore additional hardware for the Xbox line.
Now, as Windowscentral reports, we can confirm the rumors and know that this is a modernized HDMI streaming device that runs Xbox Game Pass and its cloud gaming service. However, Microsoft is exploring further iterations of the product before launching it on the market.
In a statement provided to the site, a Microsoft spokesperson described its commitment to “lowering” the boundaries of Xbox content through low-cost hardware, while acknowledging that the existing version of Keystone needs a little longer before. to be launched.
“Our vision for Xbox Cloud Gaming is unwavering – our goal is to empower people to play the games they want, on the devices they want, wherever they want. As announced last year, we worked on a game-streaming device, codenamed Keystone, which could be connected to any TV or monitor without the need for a console.“said a Microsoft spokesperson.

“As part of any technical journey, we constantly evaluate our efforts, review our teachings, and make sure we bring value to our customers. We have decided to ditch the current iteration of the Keystone device. We will capitalize on what we have learned and refocus our efforts on a new approach that will allow us to offer Xbox Cloud Gaming to more players around the world in the future.“.
Keystone has been in development for a couple of years now, with Microsoft continuing to finalize product features.
According to the hypothesis, Keystone might work with some sort of reduced Windows or Xbox operating system, as “Keystone” originally appeared in a list of operating systems alongside the different Xbox platforms. Using Windows instead of alternatives like Android would allow Microsoft to offer their own media streaming apps like Microsoft Movies & TV. However, using Android would potentially be a quicker way to market by targeting apps like Netflix and possibly Spotify.
A low-cost streaming device obviously makes commercial sense, as Microsoft pushes to bring Xbox Game Pass to more families who may not be interested in owning a “full” console.
