Microsoft traces the history of Xbox with the infamous Red Ring of Death poster.
Xbox it has had an incredibly rich history. While relatively younger than other large publishers like Sony or Nintendo, Xbox has maintained a prominent presence in both the community and the industry since the launch of the original Xbox.
However, if there is one thing that can be said about Xbox as a brand it is that there have been a number of obstacles along the way.
Over the years, Xbox has pursued a number of initiatives in terms of new technologies and acquisitions of various studios, but it hasn’t always gone smoothly. From the rise and fall of Kinect, to the numerous hardware problems Xbox One encountered when it first launched, Xbox has had its fair share of difficulty. However, one of the most legendary pieces of Xbox iconography is also one of its biggest flaws: the Red Ring of Death, which has now been turned into a poster.
Microsoft officially created a poster based on the Red Ring of Death as part of a promotion for the Power On: The Story of Xbox docuseries, which traces both good and bad times in Xbox history. The Red Ring of Death poster, along with various other merchandise items intended to celebrate the docuseries, are now available for purchase in the Xbox store.
During the era Xbox 360, gamers often encountered a hardware problem due to the console overheating. The green ring of light surrounding the power button glowed red, and the amount of ring segments turning red determined the severity of the hardware problem. This has consistently happened to so many users that Xbox players have called it the Red Ring of Death.
The Red Ring of Death has since become synonymous with the Xbox as a whole and has brought attention to issues with overheating consoles in general. The “red ring of death” is a significant piece of Xbox history that apparently cost Microsoft a billion dollars.
