Microsoft creeps into the continuing Chinese blocks on gaming.
Although Tencent is a global giant in the world of video games – and not only – in China, video games are not exactly among the most popular elements, with continuous blocks that also undermine the development of new software and manufacturers. To help in this situation, however, an unexpected protagonist intervenes: Microsoft.
The Redmond house is setting up a team to help Chinese developers, especially to reach a wider global audience. This was reported by Rod Chang, senior director of Microsoft’s Asia Gaming department.
The new staff will report directly to the Xbox Gaming Ecosystem Group according to a report by the South China Morning Post and include Shanghai-based business strategy managers who will assist local studios in releasing products on Xbox. This move comes after a further tightening of video game regulations in China, the latest of which places new limits banning children from playing Monday through Thursday, with one hour of play allowed at 8pm Friday through Sunday.
This situation has led to the closure of approximately 14,000 studios in the “Land of the Dragon”, with Microsoft seeing a major investment opportunity. It will be interesting to see what comes out of it.
