A joint project that in 18 months has led to the development of two high-performance tires tailored to the needs of those who will get behind the wheel of the new Ferrari 296 GTB, the Prancing Horse V6 plug-in hybrid berlinetta. It is about the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S K1 and Pilot Sport Cup 2R K2products that the French company has created by working closely with the Maranello brand to create tires that could enhance performance both in road use and on the circuit.
From this point of view, both are marked with the specific marking dedicated to Ferrari, the symbol “K”, present on the sidewalls of the tires. A development carried out with innovative methods, through simulators and digital models that have made it possible to create a highly performing product and at the same time reduce the environmental impact given the lower production of prototypes. Production and test times have also been further reduced, with the simulator making it possible to create a tailor made tire. During the sessions at Fiorano, Michelin was able to gather fundamental information about grip, through the sensations of the riders who could convey the feeling and driving impressions. In particular, i Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 4S K1 they are high performance tires suitable for daily use on the road, guaranteeing a good response even for occasional use on the track. It is a product capable of providing a good balance between grip, driving pleasure and control of the car, as well as a good mileage. THE Pilot Sport Cup 2R K2 instead they are designed for the circuit but equally approved for use on the road. Born to enhance performance and for already extreme driving, they have a special compound composed of functional elastomers, which makes the material more homogeneous. The result is a very high level of dry grip which enables very high cornering speeds, combined with excellent high speed stability, improved rolling resistance and wet grip.
“It was a challenge and a great human adventure. The needs of Ferrari engineers led us to use the best of our technologies to develop specific Michelin Pilot Sport 4S K1 and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R K2 tires. – explained Hervé Charbonnel, head of development – Our know-how, combined with the use of simulation, has allowed us to push the limits Of grip thanks to an innovative optimization of the tread, thus providing the driving precision and the sporty feeling that are essential characteristics of Ferrari. “
