“Useless stocks, the mafia hasn’t killed for 27 years “
“We are admired by those magistrates and those journalists with a mileage escort and yet for 27 years the mafia has not carried out attacks or even prepared them”. He said it Michele Santoro, journalist, TV presenter and author, during the interview conducted by the director of TPI Giulio Gambino at the TPI Fest! 2021 of Sabaudia.
The famous journalist presented his latest book “Nothing but the truth” in which he retraces the events of the mafia attacks of the 1992-1993 massacre season starting with the testimony of Maurizio Avola, former Cosa Nostra mafia killer. In the book Michele Santoro argues that looking for an “hidden” instigator behind the massacres is a very serious error of perspective because the Cosa Nostra cannot be reduced to a group of assassins under the orders of third parties. Rather, it should be interpreted as a great power that over the years has moved to the sides or at times in antithesis to the state but without ever submitting to it. So, according to Santoro, instead of looking for alleged and probably non-existent hidden principals, magistrates should try to clarify the responsibilities of those who had to guarantee Paolo Borsellino’s safety and instead did not, leaving him alone.
Santoro comes to this conclusion by trying to retrace those dramatic moments from the point of view of the criminal organization. In his reconstruction, Riina felt betrayed by the Socialist and Christian Democrats party who had welcomed Falcone in Rome, as well as by Silvio Berlusconi, to whom the mafia had guaranteed its support in the early years of Fininvest, and who then in the 1990s had hosted on his networks the battle of Costanzo against the mafia itself.
According to Santoro, the Riina bombs are precisely the reaction to this “betrayal” by the state and the political and economic power on the eve of Tangentopoli. “Cosa Nostra has never taken orders from outside”. – said the reporter on the stage of the TPI Fest! 2021 in the interview with Giulio Gambino – “There has never been a Berlusconi who organized the massacres. I explain it in my latest book ”.
Speaking of the Chief of Chiefs, Santoro then added: “Rina was not a thirsty delinquent, but Napoleon Bonaparte of delinquency who wanted to acquire the entire Cosa Nostra, then organized into five Sicilian provinces. To do so, he has the old leaders killed, he puts his trusted men in every province. The problem is that when he is about to appropriate the immense wealth to manage it himself, Falcone emerges, who creates what is called the Buscetta theorem, that is the possibility of using collaborators to demonstrate the responsibilities of the mafia in the greatest crimes. The strategy of the Riina bombs also starts from this ”.
Santoro resizes in his book the weight of the deviant secret services and the unfaithful police forces in the organization of the attacks on the basis of the declarations of Avola which denies the presence of 007 at the time of the attack in via D’Amelio in which Paolo Borsellino died . In this regard, the journalist criticizing both recent investigations by the judiciary and journalistic inquiries on Mafia reports and Report’s secret services then provocatively asked the audience: “But in your opinion it is possible that an organization that is ready to kill a” man of honor “why did you fail to declare that a third degree relative of yours is a policeman to take orders from the same police forces with which he is at war?”.
“Appointments Rai? The Discovery programs are not needed on public TV “
During the interview, Michele Santoro then commented on the new appointments of the Rai top management proposed by Draghi: “Carlo Fuortes must demonstrate that he can do something much bigger than managing a theater. Marinella Soldi studied in England, has the qualifications, has made Discovery. But have you seen Discovery? Go and see: people quartered because they have to lose weight, the restaurants in the morning to the evening. Surely he will be talented but when I choose two people who have educational qualifications they have to tell me what kind of TV they want to do, what program they want to carry on. Salini is a man with an extraordinary background, but he hadn’t directed anything in his life and he was caught in a second-rate television studio. They will be appreciated but tell us what they need to do. The Elkanns are little lambs. With what criteria do they appoint Repubblica and La Stampa directors? Only power. The editorial audience has nothing to do with it. In fact, they appointed directors independently of that, from Molinari to Giannini. We will be kept increasingly out of international choices ”, concluded Michele Santoro, journalist, presenter and television author, during the interview conducted by the director of TPI Giulio Gambino at the TPI Fest in Sabaudia.
