MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico announced this Friday that it will again apply for visas to Brazilians who wish to enter its territory as of mid-December, given the increase in people using the country to enter the United States illegally.
In October, the Secretariat of Government (Segob) announced that it intended to impose visas on Brazilians, suspending a year 2000 agreement –which entered into force in February 2004– by which Mexico and Brazil eliminated the requirement between the two countries.
“A substantial increase in Brazilians entering the national territory under the terms of the Visa Suppression Agreement was identified, with a purpose other than that permitted by the visitor’s permanence condition”, said Segob in a publication this Friday in the Official Gazette.
The measure will take effect 15 days after its publication.
Brazilians arriving in Mexico by plane must carry an electronic visa. Those arriving by land or sea must obtain a regular visa.
In October, Reuters reported that the United States was interceding for Mexico to impose visas on Brazilians.
Each year, tens of thousands of immigrants flee their countries to the United States in hopes of embracing the “American dream”. In recent months, thousands of Haitians have flocked to Mexico’s northern border. Many of them do not come directly from Haiti, but from Brazil or Chile.
A few days ago, Reuters reported that Mexico was studying the possibility of establishing stricter entry requirements for Venezuelans, in part in response to requests from Washington, after a sharp increase in border arrests for citizens of the South American country.
