On June 27, a trailer containing dozens of suffocated people was discovered in San Antonio, Texas, in Bexar County. As of last week, the county coroner had confirmed the death of 53 migrants, including 26 Mexicans, 7 Guatemalans and 14 Hondurans, who were transported in the truck without ventilation and under high temperatures.
On Tuesday, during a bilateral meeting, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, addressed the migration issue, where they agreed that they are taking “immediate and coordinated” measures to manage the “unprecedented” flows of migrants arriving in both countries.
And they committed to launching a binational working group on labor migration pathways and worker protection, promoting a mobility strategy, responding to child migration, as well as addressing the “root causes of migration in the Americas.”
The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has detected nearly 1.4 million of undocumented immigrants so far in fiscal year 2022, which began last October.
The Mexican government reported an 89% year-on-year increase in the number of migrants presented or channeled by the immigration authority in the first quarter of 2022, adding 77,626 from January to March.
