Mexico: fire in the subway leaves about twenty people intoxicated

A new incident in the Mexico subway, among the busiest in the world, left about twenty people slightly intoxicated due to a fire this Monday, two weeks after a serious accident and the deployment of the National Guard in the transportation system. .

In the morning, there was a short circuit at the track level that generated an outbreak of fire that was immediately extinguished, explained Guillermo Calderón, director of the Metro System to the Milenio television station.

“A very significant amount of smoke was generated (…). That caused the mild intoxication of around 20 users” that are being cared for, added Calderón.

The official explained that the capital’s prosecutor’s office has already begun an investigation to determine the origin of this new mishap in the transportation system used by some 4.6 million people daily.

In two weeks there have been several incidents in the subwaysomething unprecedented since it was inaugurated in 1969.

The most serious of them was a train crashon January 7, which left an 18-year-old student dead.

The mayor’s office announced on January 12 the deployment of 6,060 elements of the militarized National Guard to monitor the facilities in anticipation of incidents caused by sabotage.

But on January 15, with the guards already deployed,
two trains caused scenes of panic among users. On May 3, 2021, a collapse on an elevated subway line left 26 dead.

Opponents and social organizations denounce that these incidents are due in large part to the lack of investment on the part of the mayor’s office headed by the leftist Claudia Sheinbaum, one of the candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
