CDMX.- Mexico is experiencing a rebound in infections due to the omicron variant of covid-19. However, this growth has been slower than in the fourth wave of the pandemic and hospitalizations have not increased, health authorities said Tuesday.
“What we have been identifying in the recent nine weeks is a progressive increase in cases,” he said. Hugo Lopez-GatellUndersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion during the morning press conference from the National Palace.
The official, in charge of managing the pandemic in Mexicoassured that this slowness in the increase in infections indicates that there is a higher level of immunity in the citizenry than on previous occasions.
However, he stressed that despite the rebound, hospitalizations practically do not increase.
“The most important thing is that, although cases are increasing, hospitalizations are not increasing. The occupancy of beds with a fan is at 1% and the occupancy of general beds is at 4%, ”he pointed out.
He pointed out that this shows that the omicron variant produces a cold, “but with less probability of damage to the lungs, which is what can cause a serious illness,” he explained.
In addition, the official added that deaths from covid-19 remain controlled in minimal quantities.
“On average, there are 5 daily deaths nationwidea notably lower figure, especially compared to the second wave”.
The official also said that Mexico maintains its vaccination plan, which continues to focus on lagging adults and children over 11 years of age.
He also pointed out that inoculation will soon begin in children between 5 and 11 years old, for which just over 3 million boys and girls in that age range have already been registered. “The response has been very positive,” she concluded.
