insecurity in the area
In the state of Quintana Roo are located several of the most touristic points of the country, such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. In recent years, the region has suffered a wave of violence due to drug trafficking that plagues Mexico.
According to official figures, Since December 2006, more than 340,000 people have been murdered throughout the country. On April 14, another shooting in Playa del Carmen left one person dead and dozens injured.
On January 21 of this year, two other Canadians died after being caught in a shootout at a hotel near Cancun.
It is because of these facts that just a few days ago, on June 13, the United States updated its list of alert regions to which its citizens should not travel. The recommendation of the United States Department of State was to be careful with the central areas of Quintana Roo.
