Mexican authorities are investigating the death of 17 people, who were apparently killed during a wake in San José de Gracia, in the west of Morelia, capital of the state of Michoacán, whose control is disputed by several drug trafficking groups.
The testimonies of the population, investigated by the authorities, indicate that the armed men broke into the funeral ceremony over the weekend and murdered those attending.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked in his traditional morning conference to have “patience” so that the facts are clarified and assured that he waits “calmly” that nothing that is described from the scene is true.
“We still don’t have information,” López Obrador added on Monday, February 28.
In a video that went viral on social media, a group of people can be seen against a wall, most of them with their hands behind their heads, before apparently being shot by a group of men with rifles. After the shots, the smoke covered the place.
The Attorney General of the state of Michoacán assured that it still cannot be confirmed how many people died because the attackers “cleaned up the scene, washed the sidewalk and took the bodies away.”
At the scene, the investigators only found a bag full of human remains and bullet casings.
“Only material such as firearm cartridges was found at the site where the video is suspected to have been filmed, as well as cleaning products in a bag. We were able to appreciate that the site had been recently washed,” assured an official from the FGE.
Jorge Luis Anguiano, the mayor whose corregimiento includes San José de Gracia, said he saw a long line of vehicles entering from the neighboring state of Jalisco, headquarters of the cartel of the same name.
Anguiano also said that the local police did not have the power and weapons to intervene.
“Seeing the number of suspected criminals that were there and given the rules of engagement, we had to back off. We don’t have the firepower to handle these kinds of situations,” Anguiano said.
According to local media, the police are often outgunned by criminal groups.
violence at funerals
Wakes have been the target of internal violence in various sectors of Mexico, where cartels are vying for control of trafficking routes and territory to extort money from citizens.
In January 2021, a group of men stormed a wake in the central Mexican city of Celaya and shot nine people to death.
And in early February 2022 alone, nine people were killed in the border city of Juárez, when armed men entered the wake of a man who died in prison.
