A success for Metroid Dread.
One of the most anticipated video games of 2021 was Metroid Dread, which has reinvigorated interest in the franchise Metroid who hadn’t seen a new main title in 14 years. When it launched last month, Metroid Dread was very well received and some fans say it’s the best game of the year.
Now, a few weeks later, the data confirms that Metroid Dread had the biggest launch of any title in the series in America. The tweet comes from Mat Piscatella, currently a member of the NPD group. In his tweet, he shares how Metroid Dread was the third best-selling video game of October while it was the first for sales on the Nintendo Switch.
The analyst also shared that Metroid Dread had a bigger launch than any Metroid game in history currently being charted by NPD. Physical sales in launch month alone “nearly doubled” those of Metroid Prime, which previously held the franchise’s highest sales.
US NPD SW – Metroid: Dread debuted as October’s # 3 best-selling game, while also ranking 1st on Switch. Metroid: Dread achieved the highest launch month sales of any Metroid franchise release in tracked history.

Unsurprisingly, Metroid Dread has become such a behemoth for the franchise. Prior to the game’s release, it really felt like the franchise was in limbo with no clear release date for Metroid Prime 4 after being announced years ago. Fans of the franchise couldn’t wait to return and Metroid Dread was the perfect opportunity to do so.
