Two brothers discovered, last Saturday (19), that they were making a meteorite that they found in the Paraíba city of Nova Olinda, in 2014, as a table decoration. The information is from G1.
Edsom and João Oliveira say they found the stone when they were looking for precious metals in a lake in the region. As soon as the detector began to beep in a different way, they removed the 26.93 kg stone.

“Some people took it to see, they thought it was lead, because it was small and heavy, but we never imagined it was a meteorite,” Edsom told G1.
He only suspected that the object could have come from space when another rock storm occurred, which hit the Pernambuco city of Santa Filomena, arousing the curiosity of several researchers. That’s when Edsom called his brother saying that he saw some similarities of those meteorites with the stone they had at home and sought the help of a professional, researcher Andre Moutinho.
After taking the object to São Paulo, Moutinho confirmed that it was a meteorite and carried out chemical, physical and petrographic analyzes to classify it.
After confirmation, the stone went to a private safe in an apartment of Edsom, in Rio de Janeiro, and several interested parties in Brazil and abroad have already bid on it, but the brothers’ idea is that it be purchased by the government of Paraíba.
In a statement sent to the press this Tuesday (22), the State Secretariat for Education and Science and Technology (SEECT) of Paraíba said that it has not yet received contacts to hold a hearing on the subject, but is willing to convene a meeting with the Paraiba Association of Astronomy to discuss the object’s fate.
There is also a bill in progress that establishes that all meteorites found in Brazilian lands are considered assets of the union and cannot be exported without prior authorization from the National Mining Agency.
