Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fantasy but it wants to be so in a different way from other games. The director went looking for advice on the matter and the designer of Neon Genesis Evangelion also gave one.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the new game from Atlus, made by the creators of Persona. Although this latest saga has something of fantasyis mostly based on our world and must still follow its rules. The new game, however, is freer as it is set in a completely original world.

These words “helped a lot” the director to find the way to Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Hashino’s words on Metaphor: ReFantazio
“I ended up meeting various people several Japanese fantasy creators” says Hashino. “What I learned was that what they thought about fantasy, and what people seem to like, is that it’s a very free medium where you can do whatever you want – it’s not limited from the real world in any way.”
While Metaphor’s fantasy setting opens the door to “everything,” Hashino explains that the project However, it draws inspiration from real life. Metaphor: ReFantazio touches on racial tensions, the search for another ruler and political elections.
Hashino also has modeled the various tribes on different personality types. One of these tribes is inspired by older generations imposing their values on younger ones, for example. “Then there is a group of people who have problems speaking their minds and expressing their emotions and thoughts. In Japanese we call them ‘muttsuri’. We have formed a tribe around them,” Hashino said. “The tribe of long-eared characters is based on the personality trait that in Japanese we call ‘yujufudan’, which means indecisive. Basically, it is a group of people who have no opinions of their own, but are very ready to accept opinions others”.
